EVGA releases update to overclock GTX 460

EVGA releases update to overclock GTX 460 by 7%
By Matthew DeCarlo
EVGA has released an update that should squeeze a little extra juice out of what is already one of
today's best mainstream graphics card
. The FPB (
Free Performance Boost
) BIOS update applies to a couple of the company's
GTX 460
models and pushes the core and shader clock frequencies from 675/1350MHz to 720/1440MHz -- a 7% increase. Additionally, it unlocks the fan speed so it can be set to 100% via the
EVGA Precision overclocking utility
.
Only 768-P3-1360-XX and 01G-P3-1371-XX parts are eligible for the speed gain, while the fan tweak applies to those as well as 768-P3-1362-XX and 01G-P3-1373 cards. The latter two ship factory overclocked at 763/1526MHz if you're wondering why they didn't get a boost. To update: download the proper file below, extract the contents, close open programs, run update.exe, tap Y to begin, reboot once complete, and reinstall your GPU drivers.

Fastest quad-core, new six-core AMD chips in September

Fastest quad-core, new six-core AMD chips in September
By Jose Vilches

AMD is getting ready to add a new member to its six-core chips family as well as a new flagship quad-core and a couple more budget processors, according to a report on
X-bit labs
. The Phenom II X6 1075T should bridge the gap between the current 1055T and 1090T six-core parts, with a $230-240 price tag and 3GHz base clock speed. The chip will be able to go as high as 3.5GHz when AMD's Turbo Core technology kicks in, but otherwise specs should look familiar to those of its predecessors, with support for DDR3-1333 memory and a total 9MB of cache.

The forthcoming AMD Phenom II X4 970 Black Edition should become AMD's fastest quad-core offering and will reportedly
come in two flavors
-- a retail boxed version based on Deneb with four cores in total, and an OEM version based on the Zosma design, which is basically a six-core Thuban chip with two disabled cores. In other words, enthusiasts should be on the lookout for the latter if they want to squeeze some extra performance by unlocking these cores.

The X4 970 will cost around $200, clocked at 3.50GHz with 8MB of cache, dual-channel DDR2/DDR3 memory support and AM3/AM2+ motherboard compatibility. Last but not least, a dual-core Phenom II X2 560 clocked at 3.30GHz, as well as a quad-core Athlon II X4 645 clocked at 3.1GHz should hit the scene with a price tag hovering around $100. If X-bit's sources are accurate, you should be able to find one of these in stores starting September 21.

Zeus3 Trojan quietly steals $1m from bank accounts

Zeus3 Trojan quietly steals $1m from bank accounts
By Matthew DeCarlo

A new version of the Zeus Trojan has surfaced called Zeus3, and it's supposedly
emptying bank accounts across the UK
with the equivalent of over $1 million stolen thus far. According to experts at
M86 Security
(PDF), the malware first appeared early last month and is said to be the most "sophisticated and dangerous threat" the firm has ever seen.

In addition to simply collecting login credentials and bank details, apparently, the infection can siphon money from an account. It checks to see if an account contains more than £800, and if it does, the cash is silently funneled to mule accounts. Zeus3 then serves up fake bank balance to fool unwary users into thinking everything is fine.

"This is an extremely sophisticated version of the virus and it cannot be detected by traditional security software," said an M86 executive. Zeus3 has drained some 3,000 accounts from an unnamed British bank, and it only affects Windows systems. Since most antivirus applications can't detect the Trojan yet, you should keep a close watch on your funds and use unaffected platforms for online banking -- or just hide your money under a mattress until this whole thing blows over.

Forceware 257.15 driver accidently allows use of ATI+NVIDIA PhysX

Forceware 257.15 driver accidently allows use of ATI+NVIDIA PhysX
Kevin Spiess - Monday, June 14, 2010 8:12pm (PT)
Driver pulled then returned

On Friday, a new 257.15 Beta Forceware driver came out for NVIDIA video cards. Before not too long after the driver hit the net, it was discovered that 257.15 allowed for NVIDIA card to be used in conjunction with ATI cards, for PhysX support. In other words, if you have an ATI video card, you can use the driver to make a second NVIDIA card installed in your system into a dedicated PhysX card.
After discovering the error, NVIDIA pulled the driver. But apparently after many folks complaining, the driver was put back up. Some tech journalists supposed that the incident might have been a testing of the waters, for this feature to possibly be implemented in future driver releases. NVIDIA claims it doesn't want this driver feature released because it would cause them more technical support problems than it would be worth.
If you are unfamiliar with the technology, PhysX is a proprietary game physics system featured in some PC games. The biggest title for PhysX last year in gaming was probably Batman: Arkham Asylum, which had some extra smoke, a better-flowing cape, and things of the such, for example.
Having this feature would be useful to many folks who upgraded an older NVIDIA card to an ATI card, and would prefer using their card over selling it. Having, for example, a HD 5870 and a 8800 GT (9800 GT) for dedicated PhysX would be a good use of an older video card.

NA Server Lag / PC Patch / Community Wednesdays
Thursday, 24 June, 2010 at 13:22 PST

In the recent BF Blog, some issues have been addressed concerning North American Server Lag, PC Patch, PS3/Xbox 360 Maintenance, and "Community Wednesdays".

I am happy about the warm welcome I received from you guys and hopefully this is the beginning of something GREAT!

This is the latest update on the lag issue on the NA servers.

The DEV team have been working hard to find a solution to this issue for quite some time now and we think that we have a possible fix now that will roll out gradually over the next few days as the console servers are currently undergoing maintenance in North America to resolve the lag issues being experienced.

PlayStation 3 maintenance is complete with Xbox 360 servers being maintained during today on servers that empty to avoid disrupting your game sessions in progress. If you are in America and Canada you can set your EA profile to your country of residence to connect to your local servers which should be lag free once again when maintenance is complete. Report any continued lag issues to us on our forums http://forums.electronicarts.co.uk.

I would also like to add that the BFBC2 PC patch is currently still in development and we have sent it for STEAM compatibility testing today. All being well the patch will be released early next week. For information on what the patch fixes take a look at the changelog on the official forums at http://forums.electronicarts.co.uk.

I would also like to announce every Wednesday from now on to be “Community Wednesdays” where I will give you guys a weekly update in the form of a blog post, but also in forums and a direct link to this on the official BFBC2 twitter account at http://twitter.com/OfficialBFBC2 .

In these community Wednesday posts I will supply you with information regarding the game.
